NEW MARYLAND · REVISED ROLE EVIDENCE

A licence renewal and a revised offer need separate evidence

USAvisa field guide · 2 minute readReviewed 7 September 2026
THE SHORT ANSWER

A professional licence may establish a listed credential alternative while an amended offer raises a separate duty question. Keep both current and explain their dates. Do not assume renewal of the credential confirms that the changed job fits the same TN profession. The decisive choice is whether the changed role still fits the selected listed profession after the evidence is read together. Hypothetical example: a geothermal mapping analyst has a current credential, but the revised offer shifts most of the week to vendor purchasing. The employer should produce an accurate allocation of duties before the applicant relies on the prior profession analysis. A valid credential does not make any revised position qualify.

01

Identify the licence actually relied on

Hypothetical example: an architect renews a provincial licence while an employer revises the role to include more purchasing work. Retain the licence, renewal evidence and the operative job description. Confirm what the licence authorizes and its validity rather than relying on a generic professional-membership statement. Create a document index that pairs each record with the fact it establishes: citizenship, credential, job duties, temporary employer relationship, and any name history. That prevents a renewal notice from being mistaken for evidence of the revised role.

02

Assess the offer independently of the credential

The architect TN listing permits a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree or a state or provincial licence. The actual activities must still fit the profession, and destination-state practice requirements remain separate. Canadian or Mexican citizenship, prearranged qualifying activities and temporary entry are also required; a current licence does not replace them. Ask the employer to explain who supervises the work, what professional judgment is required, and why the job needs the stated credential. The concrete decision is whether the revised duties remain within the selected TN profession or require a different lawful plan.

03

Explain timing and document changes honestly

Record when the licence and duties changed and provide the earlier documents when relevant to the history. Foreign degrees from institutions outside Canada, Mexico and the United States require reliable credential evaluation; foreign-language USCIS submissions require complete certified English translations. Neither service should silently rewrite the credential or job history to match a preferred narrative. Compare document dates before presenting the file. If a résumé, licence, or offer reflects an earlier version of the role, retain it and explain the change honestly. Complete the employer letter only after the duty allocation is settled.
