Put the state licence at the front of the schedule
A provincial licence satisfies the appendix qualification, but it does not authorize practice anywhere in the United States, and the state board that does authorize it runs its own process. Expect verification of education, verification of the Canadian licence, examination records, fingerprinting and a fee, and expect it to take months rather than weeks. Some states offer a temporary permit while an application is pending and some do not. Ask the employer's recruiter exactly which state credential the role requires, and start that application before anything else in the file moves.
Obtain the health care worker certification early
Certain health care occupations, registered nursing among them, require a certificate confirming education, licensure, English language proficiency and examination before admission in this category. It is issued by an authorized organization, it takes time because it depends on institutions responding directly, and without it an otherwise complete application fails at the border. Confirm which certificate applies to the occupation, apply as soon as the offer is real, and keep the original with the travel documents rather than in a shipping container.
Make the employer letter describe nursing, and describe it temporarily
The letter should name the position, describe the professional nursing duties, state the licence relied on, give the salary, and set out the intended period of employment and the facility where the work is performed. A description that emphasises unlicensed support tasks undermines the professional finding, and an open-ended letter promising a permanent career undermines the temporary-entry finding. Both are fixable by asking the employer to be specific. Any ownership interest in the employer must be disclosed, and self-employment in the United States is not permitted in this category.
Choose the application route and keep the file portable
A Canadian citizen normally applies at a Class A port of entry or a designated pre-clearance facility, presenting citizenship, the offer letter, the licence and the certification, and receives no visa stamp. Where a hospital prefers certainty before a start date it may file Form I-129 in advance instead. Either way, keep a complete duplicate set of the file in a second location, because a nurse who has already resigned a Canadian position has no comfortable way to go back for a missing document.
